The Acropolis Museum

In addition to visiting relatives, we had the opportunity to visit one of the famous landmarks of Athens, the Parthenon on the Acropolis, as well as the recently-built Acropolis Museum.

The modern city of Athens has been built over ruins of the ancient city. As one walks about the city, you can see various archeological sites that have been dug up over the years. One of the fascinating things about the museum, is that the building itself was built over one large section of ruins and those ruins have been untouched. Here are some pictures that show this. Unfortunately, no picture-taking was allowed inside the museum, so outside shots will have to do.

There were many beautiful exhibits on display at the museum, including a video of how some of the artifacts are cleaned up using a special laser. Also, we were able to watch a short film on the history of the Parthenon structure itself and what it went thru over the past 2000 years or so. More information regarding the museum is available on the official website: The Acropolis Museum Official Website

Any trip to Greece should include a visit to this excellent museum.
Next stop....the Acropolis.
